Beginning with its first community college partnerships in 1991, ACCENT has continued to offer affordable short-term and semester-length custom study abroad programs designed to meet the unique academic needs of the community college population. Through these efforts, ACCENT has enabled over 8,000 students from over 25 U.S. community colleges to study abroad over the past 25 years.

ACCENT Community College Scholarship: Discovering the Beauty of Rome

Today, we check back in with ACCENT Community College Scholarship recipient Jessica Nichol, who, in her wanderings, has discovered many amazing things about Rome and about herself.

There is an ancient world below Rome that is being uncovered bit by bit every day. My new Italian friend told me that it is impossible to simply put up a new building or house because they will certainly find something of the past and have to call in archaeologists to assess the site. However, I am learning that modern Rome has just as many discoveries to be made as the world below it. Continue reading

My time here studying abroad in Rome has been amazing. I’ve learned so much about other cultures, made some surprising friendships, and experienced numerous memorable moments I will forever treasure. Jessica takes us through a day in her life as a study abroad student, including the many cultural differences between Italy and the U.S.

Touchdown! I felt the plane land in Italy late on February fourth. My heart aflutter and my stomach full of butterflies, I disembarked the plane ready to take on what this new adventure held in store for me. When at home, I decided that I would leave behind my American background and embrace the Italian lifestyle. Though she expected to immediately start blending in, Rachael found that assimilation and language learning are slow– and often stressful– processes. Spring 2019 marks the one-year anniversary of the ACCENT Community College Scholarship! Over the course of the last year, ACCENT has awarded scholarships to 15 community college students, providing them the opportunity to participate in life-changing study abroad programs. As we prepare for another year of quality study abroad programming, we look forward to providing assistance to many more community college students in the coming months, starting with our Spring 2019 awardees!
