Carol Gross

Golden West College
British History and Culture Program in London

I am so excited to begin this journey overseas! I am currently attending Golden West College majoring in Liberal Studies with a minor in Social Sciences.  I have been wanting to study in another country for quite some time, and am forever grateful for this chance to do so. I will be studying the history of Britain and Ireland while living in London, England. I want to immerse myself in the culture, visit historical places, and learn all about the surrounding countries as well. While I learn about their food, politics, and art, they can in turn learn about my home, the USA. I hope this cross-cultural experience helps me grow, not just as a student, but as a grandmother and a human being.”

Hunter Dickey

Orange Coast College
French Language: CCCD in Paris

“Hello, my name is Hunter Dickey. I was born in South Africa and raised here in the United States. Throughout my youth, I grew up in a multilingual home where language immersion and multiculturalism became cornerstones of my life. I am currently a Freshman at Orange Coast College, a collegiate volleyball player, Student Senator-elect, and a language fanatic. Last year, I graduated from Huntington Beach High School where I fell in love with the French language. Finishing high school with a State Seal of Biliteracy in French, I have sought out opportunities to expand my understanding of the increasingly interconnected and international world we live in, and how French can be used as a tool for the students within it. The one-of-a-kind opportunity to study abroad in Paris, France with the Coastline Community College District and ACCENT is a chance that I cannot wait to jump into. I look forward to spending July 2019 with all of the incredible students and staff members joining me. I hope that, together, we can make this experience incredible, formative, and impactful for everyone involved. À Bientôt!”

Megan Jones

Orange Coast College
Summer in Italy Program

“I grew up in a tiny city in the heart of central California just about an hour south of Sacramento. My childhood was spent swimming across rivers with my friends to pick the wild blackberries that grew on the other side, exploring California’s famous redwood forests, catching San Francisco Giants baseball games, and running wild with my siblings at Disneyland.  Currently, I live just outside of LA where I’m studying public relations in hopes of one day being a community outreach coordinator for either a major entertainment corporation or sports organization.

My family used to take trips all across the United States, and collectively, I’ve been to just over half. Because of this, I absolutely love traveling and exploring new places, but I’ve never had the chance to journey outside of North America— until now! I know that as a public relations professional it is essential to be able to adapt to different situations and form lasting connections with diverse groups of people. I know that studying abroad will give me the opportunity to practice both! I’m looking forward to navigating this new adventure set out before me as I get ready to fly off to Florence during the summer!”

Frida Linero

El Camino College
El Camino College Study Abroad Program in Madrid

“My name is Frida Linero and I attend El Camino College in Torrance, CA. My major is Business Administration, with a focus on international business. With this specific interest, it is essential to be well rounded and have a strong understanding of various cultures. This is what drew me to go outside of my comfort zone and pursue the chance to study abroad.

I like to be involved on campus as a way to get to know other students. The majority of my time on campus is spent in class or working. As a student worker, my job has allowed me to interact with other students and get to know their stories. Additionally, I entered El Camino with a support system already intact. The Puente Program has helped me tremendously in my transition from high school to college. Puente helps the Latinx community who aspire to transfer to a university by creating cohorts. For me, it was extremely beneficial to be surrounded by students who have the same goals as myself. Additionally, I joined a club on campus called “Hermanas y Hermanos”, which creates a space for all Latinx students to relax, socialize, and network. I have made great friends simply by being active on campus and I look forward to getting to know the other students who are studying abroad.”

Esteban Hernandez

Golden West College
British History and Culture Program in London

“What an amazing opportunity that I have been awarded. At first, I was hesitant to apply for the scholarship, but hard work and determination paved the way for my award. My name is Esteban Hernandez and I attend Golden West College with a major in Criminal Justice. I plan to transfer next year in 2020 to Sacramento State University to graduate with a BA in Criminal Justice. This award will allow me to experience a new culture and country like never before. I have lived in Orange County all my life, but with the scholarship, I hope to expand my horizons!”

Thien Tran

Orange Coast College
French Language: CCCD in Paris

“Thien Tran is a student at Orange Coast College in her last semester. This Fall, she will be transferring to California State University, Long Beach, majoring in International Studies. Born in Vietnam, she has been studying French for many years and simply loves the language. She has a passion for learning about cultures and the diversity of social behaviors across the world. According to her, there is no better way to study culture than to actually dive in and experience it. Besides that, she also loves traveling, reading, learning foreign languages, and participating in volunteering activities for non-profit organizations. She possesses good time management and communication skills, both in group projects and individually. At this moment, her foremost goals are to achieve a Bachelor of Arts degree, have time to create her own travel blog, and to work with inspiring people.”
