Spring 2019 marks the one-year anniversary of the ACCENT Community College Scholarship! Over the course of the last year, ACCENT has awarded scholarships to 15 community college students, providing them the opportunity to participate in life-changing study abroad programs. As we prepare for another year of quality study abroad programming, we look forward to providing assistance to many more community college students in the coming months, starting with our Spring 2019 awardees!
Jessica Nichol and Rachael Sincavage both received scholarship awards to support their study abroad experience in Rome with Santa Barbara City College and ACCENT. Meet our Spring 2019 recipients!
I can hardly contain my excitement in having this opportunity to visit Italy and live there for 3 whole months! I live in Santa Rosa Valley, California, and this will be my first time visiting Europe. I am an Early Childhood Studies major and an avid lover of art and fashion. I also enjoy yoga, Irish dancing, drawing, and being around animals. While in Italy, I hope to visit a Reggio Emilia preschool, be face to face with historical and amazing art, and learn about the beautiful culture and people. This study abroad program provided by SBCC and ACCENT is going to forever be one of the highlights of my life! I am beyond thrilled that I will not only be able to go to school abroad, but also make new friends and encounter many fun times with them.
I was born and raised in Santa Barbara, so I have a special interest in seeing my community flourish. I’m very focused on giving back to SBCC and the community at large. Currently, I am pursuing an Associate of Science degree for transfer. Throughout my years at SBCC, I’ve developed a passion for anthropology and biomedical sciences, and hope to eventually earn my PhD in the field of anthropology. My education in these fields has ignited my interest in the world and its many cultures. I hope to use my experience traveling abroad to inspire children and teenagers in Santa Barbara. My ultimate goal is to educate them about opportunities they might not have been aware of in order to expand their cultural knowledge. I believe the more awareness people have about different cultures, the more inclusive they will be toward others, which is vital for our culturally diverse country.
Throughout their time overseas, both Jessica and Rachael will serve as community college student ambassadors, sharing articles about their time in Rome. We look forward to reading about their many experiences in Italy!
