Announcing the Winners of the Fall 2019 ACCENT Community College Scholarship!

Beginning with its first community college partnerships in 1991, ACCENT has continued to offer affordable short-term and semester-length custom study abroad programs designed to meet the unique academic needs of the community college population. Through these efforts, ACCENT has enabled over 8,000 students from over 25 U.S. community colleges to study abroad over the past 25 years.

Three Santa Barbara City College students have received scholarship awards to support their study abroad experiences in Paris and Rome. Throughout their time overseas, they will serve as community college student ambassadors, sharing articles about their time studying abroad. We look forward to reading about their many experiences in Europe! Meet our Fall 2019 recipients!

Katelon Egan

My name is Katelon Egan. I am 19 years old and about to begin my second year as a college student at SBCC. I grew up here in Santa Barbara and currently live at home with my mom, dad, sister, and two dogs. I spend my time sailing, hiking, and walking my dogs. I work as a sailing instructor and have been spending this summer coaching a sailing camp at the Santa Barbara Sailing Center. I am so excited to study abroad this fall! I have not traveled much and have never been to Europe so I have no idea what to expect, but I am looking forward to this new adventure. I know this will be such a memorable trip for me and I am hoping to learn a lot about history and other cultures as well as meet new people to share this amazing experience with.

Sam Haj

My name is Sam Haj, and I’m going to be a sophomore at SBCC this fall. I have been dying to study abroad because traveling has always been one of my sincerest passions. However, because of my academic commitments in high school and the summer classes I took to get ahead, I haven’t gotten a chance to travel outside of my home state of California in seven years. Now that I’ve graduated high school and gained a little more independence, I think it’s high time I explored the rest of the world—and doing so through the lens of a study abroad program is even better, because I can continue to work toward my graduation requirements while venturing into new worlds.
I’ve always been fond of music, writing, and cinema, so this program was the perfect match for me. Though I plan to major in business, I’d like to minor in film studies or animation, and I know that France and Italy are the epicenters of those art forms. In my spare time, I teach at kids’ summer camps, devour fiction books, play basketball, soccer, and volleyball with my younger sister, and love riding anything on wheels—from cars to scooters to skateboards to roller blades. I can’t wait to get a taste of the European lifestyle, and intend to travel to as many countries as I can throughout the semester.

Samantha Castillo

Hi! My name is Samantha Castillo and I’m an ACCENT Community College Scholarship Award recipient. I’m 18 years old, pursuing a major in film and a career as a screenwriter. I’m from Visalia, California, currently employed as a barista at Starbucks, and will be entering my second year in college.

I hope to transfer to USC or UCSB to continue my education and expand my love for cinema and writing. I’m very thankful to have received this award.
