Today, we check back in with ACCENT Community College Scholarship recipient Mia Luna Lomeli, who, after three months in Madrid, has made some lasting friendships, explored some fantastic places, and is hurriedly trying to check dozens more items off her Madrid bucket list. Currently we are in our third and last month in Spain! I can’t believe how quickly time has been flying. The first two months seemed to have lasted forever. I thought I would have so much time to settle in and explore Madrid while having time to do my school work, be with new friends, and explore other places in Europe… but well, time flies when you are having fun. This last month has been going by so fast, and I’m trying to make a bucket list of all the places I haven’t yet seen. I realize now that I should have done this at the beginning of my program, so I highly recommend doing it early on. Also, I have been trying to book last minute tickets to places such as Paris, Seville, Amsterdam, and London.
Something else my friends and I have been talking about lately is how it was so crazy that we didn’t know each other until this trip. We went from being strangers at our orientation, to knowing everything about each other. We are even planning a Friendsgiving with each other this year!
I have also started to realize how close we are to going back home, but home is also 5,800 miles away. I started to go through my photos and look at old videos of my friends and I back at home, which made me realize how much I miss them.
Having come here straight out of high school has taught me a lot about myself. This has been one of the best experiences of my life because I was able to become independent, living without my parents and away from my hometown.
As far as advice for prospective students, I recommend allowing yourself to spend time alone and explore anywhere you choose to study abroad. Also remember to take a lot of photos and videos, because it will be an experience that you will want to cherish forever.Thank you for this opportunity!
