ACCENT Community College Scholarship: Stepping Back in Time

For this week’s post, we check back in with ACCENT Community College Scholarship recipient Patricia Dominguez, as she reflects on her time exploring the wonders of London and Edinburgh. Patricia explains how she felt a sense of living history, or traveling through time as she visited historical sites throughout the UK.

My experience of studying abroad in London has more than met my expectations. London is a city from which you can peel layers upon layers of history, and experience a deeply rich culture. I felt that I was discovering a treasure with every new experience; walking through the halls of Hampton Court where King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I lived, standing in front of King Edward’s Chair in Westminster Abbey where English and British monarchs have been crowned since 1066.

I would have to say as a nursing major, one of the highlights of my time abroad was my visit to the Florence Nightingale Museum. Florence Nightingale is the founder of the nursing profession and someone that inspires me to this day. I also took a wonderful day trip to Oxford University where I explored the Oxford library and Divinity Hall, where several scenes from Harry Potter were filmed. A memorable class outing was our day spent in the Seaport town of Brighton. Our class toured the Royal Pavilion, ate amazing fish and chips on Brighton Pier, and shopped at the popular North Lane market.

Another highlight of the program for me would be our time spent in Edinburgh, Scotland. The view of the unspoiled countryside as we traveled by train was beautifully layered with shades of green. Arriving at the Edinburgh train station and walking up the steps to the main street, I noticed the cawing of nearby seagulls and stood in awe of the wondrously historic view. It was as if I had stepped back in time, the buildings seeming untouched for centuries. The iconic Edinburgh castle towered over the city from the hilltop, just a short walk away. I enjoyed watching the Scottish bagpipes being played in the streets of the Royal Mile leading to the castle entrance. Also, during this visit, my classmates and I climbed to the famous extinct volcano, Arthur’s Seat. The uninterrupted 360-degree view of the city, as far as the eye could see, was absolutely incredible. It is understandably a favorite of both tourists and locals, and undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking views I have ever seen!

The staff at ACCENT were simply amazing! They took a genuine interest in all of the students. They were very welcoming on our first day and helpful in answering all of our questions. They were also a great support in adapting to our new environment.

I highly recommend studying abroad. I learned so much about myself, became more independent, and learned how exciting it can be to adapt to another culture and also gain a new appreciation for your own. It is an incredible experience and you can’t help but be changed and grow as a person.~Patricia Dominguez, Golden West College
